Recruiting: Ohlson Professor of Head and Neck Health Services Research, Department of Surgery, Cumming School of Medicine

Position Description

The Department of Surgery, in the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary, invite applications for a tenure track appointment as the Ohlson Professor of Head and Neck Health Services Research at the Assistant Professor level. This position includes a joint appointment in the Department of Community Health Science.

The Ohlson Research Initiative (ORI) is a multidisciplinary research program dedicated to improving the lives of patients with Head and Neck Cancer. Evidence-based optimization of health care delivery including diagnosis, treatment, health system utilization and survivorship are crucial aspects of the ORI’s research focus. As the Ohlson Professor of Head and Neck Health Services Research you will lead a team consisting of other health services researchers, clinicians, external collaborators, and graduate and post-graduate students. Responsibilities include planning and implementing a comprehensive program of health services research related to head and neck cancer including the related human resources and financial management of the program. The Ohlson Professor will collaborate with the Executive Director of the ORI, head and neck surgical oncologists and members of the Departments of Surgery as well as Community Health Sciences. This work involves accessing ORI, Alberta Health Services and other databases as needed to conduct high impact research. Establishing collaborations with national and international researchers in this field is expected. Strong mentorship will be in place to support the candidate’s growth as a research leader.  This position includes annual discretionary research operating funding. Acquiring external funding at the Tri-Council level or equivalent is also expected.

Qualifications include a doctorate in a relevant health sciences discipline, post-doctoral training and a minimum of two years as an independent investigator in health services research. Experience in research related to oncology or surgery are advantageous but not required. Applicants must present evidence of an established, externally funded (at the level of Tri-Council or equivalent peer reviewed National/International organization) research program, a strong publication record as evidenced by continuous publication in high-impact journals, including as senior or first author. Applicants must show evidence of successful teaching and/or graduate student supervision, and evidence of established academic engagement in professional and other communities.
