Title: What is the current state of end of life care in adolescent and young adult cancer patients across the US?
Abstract: An estimated 69,000 adolescents and young adults (AYA) aged 15-39 years are diagnosed with incident cancer each year in the United States. Five-year survival from cancer is around 80%, resulting in untimely deaths for one-fifth of a young population. Health services research in the AYA population in general has been poorly studied due to their care falling in “no man’s land” between pediatric and adult oncology, low participation in clinical trials, and lack of data of sufficient sample size for observational studies. Understanding care patterns in AYA population at the end of life are particularly difficult to study given lack of sufficient data sources to answer relevant questions. Dr. Wernli will present ongoing research focused on understanding what health care utilization is important in this population by evaluating the utilization for an estimated 10,725 deaths among 257,400 AYA cancer patients. This project utilizes the largest available national claims data from UnitedHealth Group to describe patterns of end of life care in AYA population and qualitative work in understanding patients, caregivers, and provider perspectives on end of life care using recruitment through Twitter.
